Jose M. Marchena DMD, MD is an associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry. Dr. Marchena attended dental and medical school at Harvard before finishing his surgical training in oral surgery at LSU. Afterward training he joined the UT Houston OMFS faculty and worked with Dr. James “Jimmy” Johnson at Ben Taub. Dr. Marchena eventually was assigned Chief of Service at Ben Taub, residing over the OMFS team.
He returned to UTHealth after a decade in private practice in the Boston area. He is a recipient of multiple academic, research, and teaching awards and has published several scientific articles and book chapters in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is vice president of Smile Bangladesh, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing cleft lip and palate repair operations in rural Bangladesh.
Dr. Marchena serves as the current chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Ben Taub Hospital and focuses his practice on the management of impacted teeth and facial fractures.
Dr. Marchena is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
